Cute Nicknames For Grandma and Grandpa

When I found out I was pregnant, one of the first things I did was ask what the soon-to-be grandparents wanted to be called. My mother already had three grandchildren, who called her “Grandma,” so she was sure that’s what my children would call her.

My kids have multiple grandparents, and I knew things would start to get confusing for them (and me) if everyone was the traditional “Grandma” and “Grandpa.” This led me to do a ton of research on other names babies call their grandparents.

What I found was complete chaos. There were lists of every single possible name for grandma, and other grandparent names for every state.. it was just confusing. 

And I don’t want this to be confusing for you.

That’s why I made this list of names your children can call their grandparents. I will break these names into three categories, Traditional, Modern, and Other Languages, to make this organized and easy for you.

Traditional Alternative Names for Grandparents

1. Nana & Papa (or poppy): This traditional dynamic duo is easy to pronounce and will be one of the first words your baby says.
2. Meemaw & Peepaw: This pair of names is perfect for the southern grandparents who have that Florida charm. These two are also easier for kids to pronounce.
3.  Granny & Grampy (or Grumpy is Grandpa is a grump): A cuter version of Grandma and Grandpa.
4. Grams & Gramps: Great nicknames for the laid-back and hippie grandparents.

Modern Nicknames for Grandma & Grandpa

1. Babe + Bobo
2. Gigi (gee-gee) + Gogo
3. Cece + Coco
4. Gma (gee-mah) + Gpa (gee-pah)
5. Mimi + Momo
6. Nina + Nino
7. Ama (a-mah) + Apa (ah-pah)

 

Grandma & Grandpa in Other Languages

1. Yaya & Pappous: These two are the Greek versions of Grandma and Grandpa, and they might be my favorite forms. Yaya (yah-yah) and Pappous (pa-poosch) flow right off the tongue and they’re fun to say.
2. Nonna & Nonno: Italian versions of Grandma and Grandpa, and super lively forms. Another one of my favorites.
3. Abuela & Abuelo: The Spanish version of Grandma and Grandpa.
4. Farmor & FarFar: Swedish Versions of Grandma and Grandpa for the paternal side.
5. Bibi & Babu: Super cute, Swahili versions that might be my new favorite.
